When Can An Athlete Go Back And Play Sports?

Any concussed athlete should be immediately removed from competition, examined and observed by a trained medical professional. Repeated assessment is very important as conditions could worsen. Also, any athlete with a concussion should not be left alone. Any player with post concussion symptoms needs a medical evaluation. The athletes return to play must follow a gradual process, monitored by a medical doctor.

Important Coaching and Parental Rules for a Concussion

A PLAYER SHOULD NEVER RETURN TO PLAY WHILE SYMPTOMATIC!

“WHEN IN DOUBT, SIT THEM OUT!”

Here are the necessary steps for evaluating a concussion.

1) No physical activity, complete rest. Once the players no longer demonstrates problems then can then proceed to the next step

Note * ==>>  If symptoms occur, drop back to a step where there are no symptoms, and try to progress again.

2) Light physical exercise off of the game field (stationary bike, walking)

3) Sport specific activity without body contact (light running, easy skating)

4) On field practice without body contact.

5) On field practice with body contact, once cleared to do so by a medical doctor. The time required to progress from full noncontact exercise to contact will vary with the severity of the concussion.

6) After all symptoms have dissipated, then the athlete can return to competition.
